Bedrock Learning is a literacy curriculum that is proven to have a significant impact on children’s vocabulary. It helps to improve your child’s overall reading comprehension and communication both in and out of school.
Bedrock Learning is a digital resource that teaches and assesses vocabulary and grammar in a way that is personalised to your child and gives their teacher the data they need to monitor this crucial area of teaching and learning.
Bedrock learning supports learners to build their academic vocabulary. This is vocabulary that your child will need, not only in their exams, but in all aspects of life.
What does the curriculum cover?
Bedrock Vocabulary teaches thousands of Tier 2 words (these are challenging, ambitious words that don’t usually crop up in day-to-day conversation), through interactive lessons that all begin with a rich and authentic text.
Bedrock Grammar is a knowledge-rich curriculum that explicitly teaches grammar through videos and a variety of engaging activities. As with Bedrock Vocabulary, every lesson begins with an authentic text that demonstrates the grammar item in context, before learners embark on an interactive learning journey, learning a whole host of grammar tools and techniques.
Bedrock’s subject-specific curriculum, also known as Mapper, allows teachers to set subject-specific vocabulary aligned to their curriculum. Learning keywords in this way ensures that your child can communicate like an expert in every subject, a skill that is crucial to improving their life opportunities.
How Bedrock will be used in school
Bedrock vocabulary and grammar lessons will primarily be taken during KS3 learners’ Literacy lessons. The Literacy lessons take place once every fortnight. Students will spend half of the literacy lesson completing Bedrock lessons. Learners will then be set Bedrock homework every Literacy lesson.
Students’ English teachers will also set Bedrock homework.
Teachers will be able to view student progress on a weekly basis, and will use Bedrock reports to ensure students are doing their homework.
A child’s education is not just about school. Support from people at home can make a huge difference to that child’s progress.
Once you have signed up using your access code, you will have access to your child’s activity on the platform. Not only will you receive a weekly email giving you an update on the points that your child has earned (it’s best to aim for 20 points per week for the best progress), but also the time they’ve spent on the platform and the lessons they’ve completed.
You will also be given access to their knowledge organiser, which gives you the opportunity to see the words they already knew, the words they haven’t yet mastered, and the words that they have recently learned. This gives you the chance to bring these important academic words into your home, making it much easier for your child to use them independently (research tells us that children learn new words best when they hear or use them many times in many different situations).
Find your child’s knowledge organiser using the following steps:
The knowledge your child gains on Bedrock Learning doesn’t stay there; it can be used as a fantastic opportunity to have high-quality conversations. We have put together a list of talking prompts related to topics in Bedrock Vocabulary’s blocks, helping learners to delve deeper into the topic content and practise their speaking skills.
The school will provide parents and guardians with a unique code.
Once you have the code, you can simply follow these steps:
