28th February 202428th February 2024World Book Day QuizzesWorld Book Day QuizzesReading at Connaught School for Girls forms an integral part of both our pastoral and academic curriculum. The school value of excellence is aligned with developing strong reading habits and nurturing these through their years at Connaught. Students are expected to read during registration time and at the beginning of their English lessons. We encourage all our students from year 7 to engage with Accelerated Reader - which is a comprehension programme encouraging students to read avidly and read challenging material to broaden their knowledge. Year 7,8 and 9 have all taken part in internal class book quiz competitions to both expand and explore their general knowledge about books. The English department then selected each team to represent their class in the year group play off. Students have had to work in their teams to answer questions about : 19th century literature, Shakespeare, Harry Potter, Roald Dahl, The Crucible and some Marvel comics. 10th January 202410th January 2024Read For GoodRead For GoodThe Library had a sponsored read event for the charity Read for Good. This charity raises money for children to access reading books during their time in a children's hospital. The students gathered all their resources and got working on raising as much as they could. We raised a total of £618 for charity just simply by reading! As a thank you incentive, we've been awarded £120 in book vouchers to spend on the library. To get the competitive juices flowing, each form was competing to raise the most money. The winners were 9F and their prize was to visit the Malorie Blackman exhibition at the British Library. 9F thoroughly enjoyed the trip and learned a lot about Malorie Blackman and the many struggles she faced as an author. A special thanks to the family and friends that helped our students raise money.

18th October 202318th October 2023Jack Patchey's 'Speak Out' ChallengeJack Patchey's 'Speak Out' ChallengeJack Petchey visited the school to share their well-known 'Speak Out' Challenge. 29 Year 10 students were chosen to take part. From the very beginning of the session, students were ready to engage. The aim of the session was to help students build their confidence in public speaking. The theme of the workshop was courage and confidence. Students were tasked with a range of activities that highlighted the importance of allowing one's self to be courageous and then taking action. Some activities got the students to do things they've never done before - pretend to be amoebas, play 'rock-paper-scissors' as chickens, and pretend to be politicians using only the words "abba dabba". It was a joy to witness! Thank you to Jack Petchey for this wonderful opportunity.

We had 7 form classes in line for the 1st position. After much deliberation, the LRC Manager chose 11F to be this year's winners! They decorated their door as the book 'The Bubble Wrap Boy' by Phil Earle. Congrats 11F! Here is the winning door:
