GCSE Grades 2020

In June 2020 exam boards required teachers, who know our students well, to submit their judgements about the grades that they believe our students would have received if the exams had gone ahead.

On Friday 3rd April 2020 the Government announced details of how that process would take place, also issuing guidance for teachers, parents and students and a letter for students.  In terms of a permanent record, the grades will be indistinguishable from those provided in other years. The distribution of grades (national percentages getting each grade) will follow a similar pattern to that in other years, so that 2020 students do not face a disadvantage as a consequence of these extraordinary circumstances.

There will be an appeals process if students believe the grade awarding process was not followed correctly and an extraordinary full Autumn exam series (most likely in October) for students to take exam/s at Connaught School for Girls if they wish to.

Please note that this process is confidential and school staff are not allowed to discuss this matter with students or parents at any time.

Collection of Results - Thursday 20th August 2020

GCSE results can only be collected in person from tables situated outside the school dining room to help minimise C-19 risk (we will go inside if it is raining). Access will be via the school playground (cars are permitted to drive across the playground) at the following staggered times to help social distancing:

If students or their parents wish someone else to collect their results for them, they must email from their student email account  [email protected] with the name of the person who will collect the results. The person collecting the results must bring photographic identification. Results which are not collected will be posted on results day to the home address we have on file.

We are really sorry that we will not be able to host celebrations and photographs as we would usually. We hope you understand. Only the school leadership team will be present in school on results day. We plan to invite you all Year 11 students back to celebrate their achievements together when it is safe to do so.

The GCSE grades awarded will give students the opportunity to move on to college or sixth form. We strongly advise students to contact the colleges they have applied to with their grades to confirm your places for next year as soon as results are collected. If students are unhappy with their GCSE grades but still have secured a place at the college they wish to attend and study the courses they applied for, we strongly advise them not to think about retakes and to move on.

If students feel they cannot do this, then they will be able to appeal to the school in September if they believe the grade awarding process was not followed correctly. The school can appeal if we believe something systemic has gone wrong in relation to the results awarded but any student who would like to improve their grades will have an opportunity to take the full suite of GCSE exams in the autumn term back at school between Monday 2nd November and Monday 23rd November 2020 (confirmed dates by the exam boards). We will include further information about this with GCSE results on 20th August.
