Key Stage 4

Students choose to study this subject at Key Stage 4 because…

Languages are a key economic skill.Stratford is going to have an international rail link by 2007.In 2012 London will host the Olympic Games.Consequently there will be many opportunities for Language students in business, travel and finance.

Students choose French if they:

  • Like meeting and talking to people
  • Want to be able to understand and speak Spanish better
  • Want to have a better understanding of your own language
  • Like finding out about the culture and way of life in other countries
  • Want to open doors to new experiences and opportunities in your own country and abroad
  • Want to share in the benefits that the world has to offer and are interested in a career in tourism or a career with an international dimension

What will you study?

The GCSE course covers 4 topics:

  • My World
  • Holiday Time & Travel
  • Work & Lifestyle
  • The Young Person In Society

What you are required to do in each area:

  • Learn to talk about the above topics in Spanish, via conversations and role-play which you will practise with the Spanish assistant
  • Listen to and understand information from interviews, dialogues, instructions and announcements in Spanish
  • Read and understand instructions, signs, simple brochures, advertisements and letters in Spanish
  • Write basic information in the form of lists, postcards and letters

Course Structure

The four skills assessed are:

  • Speaking: Role-play presentation and conversation = 25%
  • Listening: = 25%
  • Reading: = 25%
  • Writing: 3 pieces of coursework (1 piece in exam conditions) = 25%

Homework

Homework is an essential part of the course for raising achievement in both the speaking and writing exam. It will include at least one learning and one written task per week.In addition to this, students are advised to spend 10-20 minutes every evening learning/revising word lists and using suggested websites. Homework is vital in preparation for high achievement in all four skills.

Assessment

There is an examination for GCSE at the end of Years 10 and 11 in Speaking, Listening and Reading and Writing. For Writing you submit 3 pieces of work taken from those written during the course. One of those submitted must have been done under exam conditions. The Speaking Test will be conducted by your teacher but recorded and marked by the AQA Examination Board. It is possible to combine Higher Tier (Grades A* to D) and Foundation Tier (Grades C to G) exam papers.
