Languages

The Languages Department at Connaught is committed to developing all students’ linguistic potential as far as possible and to encouraging them to see themselves as citizens of the global community. We feel it is extremely important for young people today to learn the skills to communicate confidently with people from other countries and to develop an interest in and awareness of life in other cultures.
All students at Connaught study two languages from Year 8 onwards. All students study at least one language to GCSE level with many students taking an additional language GCSE or coninue language studies to AS level. Languages are taught by our team of dedicated specialist teachers and language assistants in well-equipped rooms with networked interactive whiteboards. We also have language laboratory facilities to enhance the development of students’ listening and speaking skills.
For many years the Languages Department has organised visits abroad so that students may gain a further insight into the culture of the country whose language they are studying and enjoy the first-hand experience of speaking and listening to native speakers. There are a variety of day or residential visits across the year to France, Germany, Spain and Italy.
