Key Stage 4
Why girls choose to study Expressive Arts
GSCE Expressive Arts is a broad based examination course offering students the opportunity to develop communication and performance skills in drama, dance, music, art and creative writing. The course provides an excellent foundation in the “Arts” for all students as well as those considering studying an Arts subject at further education.
What will students study?
The GCSE course offers students the opportunity to experiment with and express ideas through performance in drama, dance, music, art and creative writing. All aspects of the creative process are explored from the spoken work, to movement, costume, props, scenery, lighting and sound effects. Students are required to reflect on and evaluate their practical work in the form of a written portfolio of evidence. The works of a range of Arts practitioners are studied and used to inform and stimulate students work. Examples: Film – Moulin Rouge, Painter – Toulouse Lautrec, Music – The Can Can.
Course structure
At the start of the course students take part in practical and written tasks designed to develop skills in specific art forms and how they combine together in performance. Group and solo assessments take place at the end of Year 10 and the beginning of Year 11. At the end of the course students complete a final examination presentation where they are required to work in at least 3 Art forms.
