PE & Sports Round-Up - Nov 2010

Many fantastic sporting activities have been taking place in a very busy Autumn term 2010 for the PE Department at Connaught School for Girls. It has been fantastic to see so many people involved in the success of various teams as well as the high number of girls who are participating in extra-curricular clubs either at lunchtime or after school. So far this year over 300 students have attended sports clubs or entered sports competitions and by the end of the year we hope to have had every student attend at least one club! PE Clubs include:

  • Badminton
  • Basketball
  • Football
  • Karate (for beginners, intermediate, advanced and higher belt holders
  • Netball

GCSE PE Volleyball Success

The Year 10 GCSE PE class entered into the Waltham Forest Under-15 Mini Volleyball competition in November 2010 and won! They played against other schools in the borough and came first and second. The Year 1o GCSE PE students have been working on their volleyball skills in their practical PE lessons and the students were excited that they were able to put these skills to use in a competitive situation (although they are very competitive in class as well!). The volleyball team used their digging, setting and serving skills well and finally mastered the ‘3 touch rule’.

Netball Tournament

The Year 8 Netball team represented Connaught at tournament in November 2010 which saw 16 teams from around London compete. The Year 8 team had only been together for 3 weeks prior to attending the tournament so it was a real eye opener for the team to play against some very experienced players. Although they lost all of their games it was brilliant to see such enthusiasm on a cold, wet, windy and generally miserable night!

Inter-form Bench Ball Competition

The Year 7 – 10 inter-form bench ball competition took place in November 2010 with 160 students taking part. The competition was run over 4 lunchtimes and the results are below. Congratulations to the winning teams but well done to everyone who took part. A special mention goes to 7F, 8S and 9S for their fair play and great sports-woman ship.

Jump Rope for Heart

On Friday 12th November forty three Year 7 girls took part in a ‘Jump Rope for Heart’ skipping event. Prior to the event the students participating raised well over £1000 for the British Heart Foundation with some proceeds going to the school. The event was a huge success with five students receiving prizes for their wonderful enthusiasm and effort on the day, a special prize for the student who raised the most money (a fantastic £120) and six students receiving a rucksack from the British Heart Foundation for raising over £50.

Special thanks go to four Year 10 students for helping on the day and with the organisation of this excellent event.
