Citizenship & PSHE Update - Jan 2012

Year 7

This term the year 7 students have been learning about the importance of being an active citizen. This has included lessons that have focused on how to carry out a research issue, using a variety of different communication methods, including questionnaires, presentation of results and creating leaflets. Students are currently researching the local community and making booklets which will be aimed at providing people with information about the local community. They are also writing letters to their local MP and council members about issues of their concern, suggesting improvements to the local area and what they think they can do as well as what the council can do.

Year 8

The year 8 students have been developing different projects in school. 2 groups have been taking part in an eating disorders unit –looking at the problems with dieting in teenage years. Some students have taken part in a focus group as well. The other 2 groups have been exploring the issue of human rights and have created a film based on the issues of human rights which they are hoping to be able to show at some point in the future. Currently the year 8 girls are taking part in lessons that are focusing upon fair trade and some have shown a keen interest in selling fair trade products in the school.

Year 9

The year 9 have just finished learning more about the media. They produced a critical analysis of a film depicting the role of the media in people’s lives. The film is both satirical and serious in several ways, with issues such as race, class and gender stereotypes being explored. In the near future some year 9 students will be involved in creating a media newspaper via Fronter.
