Charity Walk Raises £1000

During the 2008 London mayoral and local council elections, Connaught School for Girls became a Polling Station. Many of the students and staff took part in a sponsored walk organised by our Headteacher Mrs Betts around central London in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital. One hundred and thirty pupils from Years 7 & 8 and twenty six members of staff took part in the walk. The walk was in the form of a treasure hunt finding the answers to fourteen clues. Students and staff started at Tower Hill and walked across Tower Bridge and along the south bank, After seeing the Globe theatre, they crossed the Millennium bridge to St Paul’s Cathedral, Fleet Street and Covent Garden. They also visited Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square and finished in Westminster.

Everyone enjoyed the 8-mile walk and the students collected £5000 in sponsor money - a fantastic achievement. A cheque for £1000 was handed to Mrs Judy Kuhl, a representative of Great Ormond Street Hospital on 3rd July 2008 during school assembly when students in Years 7 and 8 watched a film that celebrates the history and work of this amazing hospital. The picture shows the three students who collected the most sponsor money presenting the £1000 cheque to Mrs Kuhl. Two of the girls belong to the tutor group that raised the largest amount of money - 7C - who were given a non-uniform treat for the day. The girls are holding teddy bears that are used to help describe to the patients at Great Ormond Street what is wrong with them and how the hospital is going to make them better.
