Black History Month

Rich and Varied Activities to Celebrate Black History Month at Connaught School for Girls in October 2007

Students at Connaught School for Girls in Leytonstone, London experienced a number of excellent activities to celebrate Black History during October 2007.

Tony Ogogo from Heritage Ceramics in Epsom, Surrey spent a day telling West African tales. The students were gripped by his stories that were full of humour, moral purpose and riddles for students to solve.

Students in Years 8 and 11 enjoyed working with Tony Ogogo in a number of African Clay Workshops. The students made busts and masks in the African Benin style. GCSE Art students were able to use the workshops to enhance their coursework portfolio.

Marie-Louise Coffi, an African Dance specialist worked with Year 7 and 10 students. She encouraged them to reflect on the achievements of black people and celebrate by dancing to traditional African music. The students gave their best and really enjoyed the day.

All students in Years 7, 8 and 9 watched a fun and interactive play performed in the school hall by 5 actors from Actorshop in Stratford. The play told the story of young black people beginning to recognise their own family history and heritage in a much brighter light.
