Duke of Edinburgh Award

The Duke of Edinbugh's Award is consistently one of the most popular extra-curricular activities offered by Connaught School for Girls. Each year, around 50 Year 10 students undertake training and practical activities towards the Bronze Award. Students learn many new skills, complete a period of community service and take part in a walking/camping expedition.

There are four sections to the Bronze Award:

  • Service
  • Skills
  • Physical Recreation
  • Expedition

Service

Students undertake some form of service to individuals or the community for a period of 3 months. Activity ideas include:

  • Doing jobs for old people
  • Reading support for year 7
  • Helping at Brownies or Rainbows
  • Working at the Stables
  • Teaching guitars
  • Teaching sport to juniors
  • Helping at youth club

Skills

Develop a practical or social skill or personal interest over a minimum period of 3 months. Activity ideas include:

  • Touch typing
  • Aromatherapy
  • British sign language
  • Snooker or Pool
  • Learn to swim
  • Art or Sculpture
  • First aid

Physical Recreation

Participate in a physical recreation regularly over a minimum period of 3 months. Activity ideas include:

  • Swimming
  • Basketball
  • Football
  • Martial Arts
  • Hockey
  • Walking
  • Canoeing

Expedition

Plan, prepare for and undertake a 2 day, 1 night expedition.
